Good Sam Receives Significant Donation
Tucked in among the many warehouses in Garland is a supply warehouse that made Tuesday, June 27, a great day for Good Samaritans of Garland, Inc. by donating 17 pallets of food, clothing and hygiene items. Because the donation was so large and the donor was requesting immediate pickup, Pam Swendig, executiv e director at Good Samaritans, called Beth Dattomo at the city of Garland for help finding a place to deliver and sort the donated items. Dattomo reached out to Garland ISD who  offered the use of a large warehouse where the donated items could be sorted and held for distribution to 10 local service agencies.

Follow the Leader - Kiwanis Key Leader - 11/28/2016

Story by Curtis Billue • Photos by Allison V. Smith

It’s the day before the Garland, Texas, Independent School District-sponsored Key Leader camp, and a small group of high school students gathers in a circle for introductions. Some are confident and joking around. A few look nervously at their own name tags, while others are so shy and quiet that when they do talk they seem to almost choke on their words.

One young man introduces himself as Jorge, but then announces that everyone can call him George. He walks a fine line between shyness and confidence, not quite sure how much of himself to reveal to the others.

Butterfly Garden at North Garland High School - 10/07/2015

Posted by

Today was a day for taking care of Monarch butterflies.  I spent the morning in the Garland Community Garden gathering needed materials for building five hugelkulturs on Tuesday. (Tuesday October 6 at the North Garland High School will be Stage Two for the installation of a special butterfly garden.  The time is 2:30 to 5:30 if you want to come help.)

What makes the installation of a Butterfly Garden at North Garland High School so special?

  • It may be the first butterfly garden at any Garland public school.  [If not, I’m sure to be corrected by my readers.]
  • It is almost definitely the first butterfly garden in the entire DFW area that is planted...
